What can you do to improve data center power consumption?
To better understand some of the issues, it helps to consider the analogy of transportation and fuel efficiency.
On one hand, vehicles such as electric, hybrid or compact cars are obviously more fuel-efficient than larger, petroleum-fueled vehicles. However, a larger vehicle such as a bus can provide a highly efficient mode of transportation since it can accommodate many passengers at a low fuel-per-passenger ratio.
This concept reflects what is occurring in today's data centers: consolidation of multiple devices into a larger shared resource. And if the shared resource happens to be a newer energy-efficient model, the benefits are magnified.

Fujitsu Unveils 320GB Mobile Hard Drive
November 27, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Fujitsu Ltd. on Tuesday unveiled the MHZ2 BH mobile hard disk drive, which features reduced power requirements and a storage capacity of up to 320GB.
The 2.5-in., 5,400 rpm, 3Gbit/sec SATA drive will be available next February, according to Fujitsu officials. The MHZ2 BH can greatly reduce power usage during idle, sleep and read/write activity by improving heat dissipation and battery life within the perpendicular magnetic recording device, told Fujitsu officials.
lazy: product looks attractive, but we shall see how attractive the price is.
